The best time to trek in Cusco depends on what you are looking for: in the southern Andes of Peru there are two clearly marked seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. Choosing the right month completely changes the experience.
Dry season: May to September
Clear skies, sunny days and very cold nights. It is high season: Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead and the sites are busier. Ideal for Rainbow Mountain and Salkantay.
Transition months: April, October and November
Our favorites. The landscape is green, there are fewer people and the weather is usually stable, with some rain in the afternoon.
Rainy season: December to March
Frequent rain, especially in the afternoon. Trails can be slippery and views are covered by clouds, but nature is at its best. The Inca Trail closes all of February for maintenance.
Quick summary
- Best weather: June to August.
- Best balance: April, May, September and October.
- Fewest people: November to March (except the year-end holidays).
There is no bad weather, only the wrong clothing: with good gear, every month has its magic.
Best time to trek in Cusco: summary
For safer weather, choose the dry season (May to September). If you prefer fewer people, the rainy season (November to March) is possible with good preparation; remember that the Inca Trail closes every February. See the Classic Inca Trail and Salkantay.
